thomas (deglebe) bruce

computer science and mathematics student

i am a computer science and mathematics student at marist university pursuing a b.s. in computer science with a concentration in software engineering and a b.a. in pure mathematics, expected 2028.

my interests primarily lie in systems programming, compiler theory, embedded computing, unix environments, and mathematically-informed software design. i work primarily within linux/bsd systems, usually in minimal, terminal-driven, tiled environments built around posix-oriented tooling.

i primarily program in c, python, golang, posix shell, and x86 assembly. i am also proficient in c++, js/ts, sql, forth, and java. additionally, i have experience with haskell, perl, and hare.

much of my technical background has developed through independent study, personal projects, and research work. my mathematical interests include graph theory, discrete mathematics, proof-authoring, optimization, and formal verification. i am particularly interested in the relationship between mathematical structure and practical systems design.

from may through august 2025 i worked as a research assistant through marist's joint study program in collaboration with atributary. my work focused on graph theory, machine learning, and identity verification research, including pagerank-inspired graph traversal algorithms for use in mitigating sybil attacks, transformer and gradient boosting models, and synthetic data generation pipelines.

i currently work as a software engineering intern on ibm's ess (formerly gpfs) team.

my philosophical orientations with regards to computing are those aligned with simplicity of design, anti-bloat, permacomputing, and building systems which remain understandable, maintainable, and durable over long periods of time.

outside of computing, i enjoy endurance running, reading, cooking, language study (shaetlan, scots, german), and low-waste living. philosophically, i am a non-spiritual pantheist and absurdist, and prefer to consider ethics with an ecosystem-focused outlook without pigeonholing myself into utilitarianism. likewise, i believe in the theory of social ecology. politically, i could be considered lib-left spectrum.

about this site

all portions of this site were written by hand using posix tools and without the use of ai. the static site generator for posts is written with sh, sed, and awk. theme, language preference, and light syntax colouring for code blocks use a small amount of javascript; the generated pages are plain html. all text is lowercase due to my personal preference toward monospace and carolingian miniscule.
